Thermal comfort is a mental condition that reflects an individual’s satisfaction with the surrounding environment, as defined by UNI EN ISO 7730 standards. This state of well-being is influenced by a range of parameters, including air temperature, mean radiant temperature, air velocity, and relative humidity. The optimal management of these factors is essential to ensure a comfortable environment while simultaneously minimizing building energy consumption.
Indoor air quality plays an equally crucial role, as it is directly linked to the health and well-being of occupants. Strategies to improve air quality focus on controlling the concentration of contaminants, both internal and external, through the use of effective ventilation and filtration systems.

The selection of HVAC systems must be guided by a thorough understanding of the specific needs of the building and its users. Among the key design criteria are:

The author is a founding partner, in 2002, of the engineering firm Planex S.r.L. and has been working in engineering for building services and pharmaceutical facilities for over 30 years. His career began in 1989 with the design and on-site activities for a new lyophilized injectable products department for Lepetit, at the time part of the DOW Chemical Group. He is currently managing the design and construction of the new M.Polo production site for the Zambon Group, the Site Master Plan of an ITALFARMACO S.p.A. manufacturing plant, the development of a new production department for Fresenius Kabi S.p.A., and various interventions within the EVOTEC Aptuit research center in Verona.

Throughout his career, he has also worked on other extremely complex building types, overseeing the construction of the production site of Pastificio Rana S.p.A. in San Giovanni Lupatoto (Verona), the Cetaceans Pavilion at the Genoa Aquarium, the commissioning of the systems of the Allianz Isozaki Tower in Milan, and many other projects.
